planned all day to mark the one-year anniversary of the occupy movement. these demonstrators started gathering last night at california street and kearney in front of a building that houses some of the larger financial institutions that they are protesting against. one year later they say you don't see those large camp-outs like you used to, but the movement hasn't gone away, it's just gotten more focused. >> as the movement grew and blossomed, i think different groups started realizing they had different focuses. so you have a work that works continually on stopping foreclosures. you have another group, the action council, which brings together community groups. >> reporter: here's what's going on today. at noon a group focused on stopping foreclosures plans to gather at the war memorial building in san francisco. then at 1:00 what they're calling a mobile street party, that starts at justin herman plaza. they're going to be taking off around 2:00. then at 3:00 a group plans to

bring trash bags to one investment group at one market plaza. then at 5:00, that's the big anniversary celebration in a march at california and kearney followed by a 6:00 p.m. event, what they're calling a debt-burning and street festival. so certainly something to keep in mind if you're in san francisco today. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:02. new this morning, angry protests continue to grow over a low-budget anti-muslim film proud in the u.s. in pakistan, one person was killed, dozens injured when anti-american protesters tried to storm the u.s. consulate in karachi. they have clashed with police for several hours. in kabul hundreds of protesters have been burning cars and throwing rocks at a u.s. military base. the mob also burned tires, shipping containers and one police car as they chanted "death to america." there's also been at least two more so-called insider attacks in afghanistan.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in menlo park with a look at what comes next for the damaged beechwood school. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. this past weekend staff and parents tried to erase any image or any issues with the fire. you can see all that remains is the dirt where the school building used to stand. there were three issues concerning whether or not they would be open this morning. one was city approval for repairs to the plumbing and electrical which they did receive. two, finding space for a third grade since it was their class that burned down. the school identified three options for temporary housing. and then supplies lost in the fire. the school had received some donations from the community to tie them over until insurance money kicks on. bottom line, they're ready to be

back up and running later this morning. the fire department believes it was a pinched electrical cord in the back of a kitchen range that started this fire early thursday morning. it did destroy a portable structure that not only housed that third grade class but the office as well. there were no fire sprinklers inside nor a monitored alarm. according to the fire chief, although it is a good idea to have those, they aren't required in modular structures, because they're considered temporary. even though this one had been in use since the mid-1980s, it was perfectly legal not to have those items. the school tells us they did pass their annual fire inspections and would have installed those systems if told to do so. it turns out the school will replace all those modular structures on campus with a permanent building next summer, one that will have a better fire suppression system. though the school could start construction sooner given that they are now down offices and one class room. beechwood is a nonprofit private school with just over 170 students in k through 8 and

yeah, that's great. in this day and age, yeah, that's tremendous. >> reporter: now fans also say having a winning season like this is good for oakland team spirit and it's more reason for the a's to stay an not move to san jose. that decision is still needing to be made by mlb commissioner bud selig, who may decide by the end of the year. the a's are off today but then it's 16 straight days to the regular season finish line. if they keep up the wins, wild card playoff games begin october 5th and those playoff tickets for the a's go on sale starting today at 10:00. you can find those yop line or right here at the box office at the oakland coliseum. and yes, those tickets are refundable in case things go the other direction for the a's. let's hope not. live in oakland, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> i thought you were going to say and, yes, i'll stand in line for you. across the bay the giants aren't a lock for the playoffs

fire early thursday morning. it did destroy that portable structure that not only housed that third grade class but the front office as well. turns out there were no sprinklers, nor was there a monitored alarm. according to the fire chief, they aren't required in modular structures because those structures are considered temporary, even though this one had been in use since the mid-1980s, it was still legal. the school tells us they did pass their annual fire inspection and would have installed those systems if told to. now, it turns out the school will be replacing all modular structures on campus with a permanent building next summer, one that will most likely have ké÷ suppression system, though the school could start construction sooner given the fact they are down offices in one classroom. by the way, beechwood is a private school but a nonprofit school with just over 170 k through 8 students, most of them from low income families in the surrounding neighborhoods here in menlo park. reporting live here in menlo

this morning who said that you may not see them as much around in large groups like you used to camping and demonstrating, but that's because they have gotten more focused with certain groups dealing more with things like foreclosures and housing issues while others are handling what they're calling unfair banking practices. this occupation is what they call the bankers heart which houses some of the largest financial institutions they have been protesting against, but it really kicks off a day of events going on downtown and in the financial district. they say one year later, they think they have made a real difference. >> nobody before talked about how we have so much wealth concentrated in 1% and that wealth is going to war, to weapons, to financial speculation and it's not going to create a productive world. it's not -- we're not investing in people, we're not investing in the future, we're investing in short-term profits. >> reporter: so here's what you need to know. at noon, a group focused on stopping foreclosures plans to
